Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies storm past John Carroll, 55-48

GAMBIER, Ohio – Down by seven, the Kenyon women's basketball team rallied in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter with a 16-2 run to defeat John Carroll University 55-48 on Tuesday night in a non-conference affair at Tomsich Arena.

Ifeoma Archimalo led the Ladies scoring 14 points off the bench while corralling eight rebounds. Jessica Gerber scored in double figures for the third time in four games with 13 points while Paige Matijasich contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Additionally, Griffin Tullis tallied seven points and seven boards while Sharon Hull chipped in with six points.

Kenyon (3-1) got off to a very good start in the first, hitting 8-of-15 shots and taking a 16-8 lead with about two minutes left after Kiele Anderson found Tullis for a layup. However, John Carroll rallied back with an 11-2 stretch capped off by two Kahrin Spear free throws to make the count 19-18, Blue Streaks. During that six-plus minute span, the Ladies went 1-for-6 and committed five turnovers.

That slim deficit was erased quickly though as Ellie Schaub found Archimalo for a layup with 4:36 left pushing the home team back up one, 20-19. Kenyon never lost the lead after that and took a 28-24 advantage into the locker room.

In the third, competition was extremely close. Trailing by four (30-26), Spear hit a three-pointer and followed that up with an and-one conversion to tie the game at 32 with 6:15 left. Dani Carlson added a long ball at the 5:50 mark pushing the score to 35-33, John Carroll. Archimalo later tied the game at 37 before Bri Pittenger scored an elbow jumper to bring the tally to 39-37.

The Blue Streaks extended their lead to 46-39 with a 7-0 run to start the fourth. Abby Adler hit a jumper with 6:18 left which forced a Ladies timeout.

Now down its biggest margin, Kenyon fought back. Out of the timeout, Matijasich scored a layup along the right side, was fouled and then converted the free throw. On the next possession, Matijasich drained a three pointer, Kenyon's first of the game, in the right corner bring the count to 46-45, John Carroll. On Kenyon's next possession, Lane Davis came up with an offensive rebound and found Gerber along the left wing. Gerber fired from three-land and scored, pushing Kenyon up 48-46. That lead was never relinquished by the Ladies.

During the game-closing run, John Carroll shot just 1-for-10. Tullis highlighted the ending for Kenyon, blocking a three-point shot from the top of the arc by Carlson.

The Ladies dominated the Blue Streaks in the paint by outrebounding the visitors 48-36 including a 16-6 mark in offensive rebounds. Kenyon also added 14 second-chance points compared to four for John Carroll.
