GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Sixth-seeded Denison University held off the second-seeded Kenyon Ladies in the fourth quarter and advanced to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament final with a 51-42 win on Friday night at Neal Fieldhouse on the campus of DePauw University.
The Big Red remained undefeated in semifinal match-ups against the Ladies (6-0) while Kenyon saw its season end for the second straight year in the semifinal round.
Miranda Diesz led Kenyon with 10 points, a game-high five assists while grabbing four boards.
Bailey Dominguez added nine points while
Ifeoma Archimalo tallied six points and six rebounds. Senior
Charlotte Bussema contributed a half-dozen points, three assists and two steals.
As a team, the Ladies struggled from the field hitting 25.8 percent including a season-low 10.5 percent from three-point range.
Offense was at an absolute premium in the first half as neither team shot any better than 23 percent.
The game's first bucket didn't fall until the 6:35 mark when
Sharon Hull scored a layup along the right side from Diesz. On the next possession, DU tied it up on a Emily Krumpe jumper. For nearly the next four minutes, neither team could find a made field goal until the Big Red's Jordan Holmes scored underneath with 2:42 left.
Denison added a couple three-pointers after that and took a 12-8 lead into the second.
In the second, Holmes helped pushed Denison's advantage to 21-10 when she scored a layup at the 4:35 mark. She tallied six points and eight rebounds in the opening half.
The Ladies did hold the Big Red scoreless for the rest of the quarter and added shots from
Sidney Cera and Archimalo to bring the deficit to 21-15.
Third-quarter action saw the Ladies finally get into a rhythm. After DU went up double-digits again (28-17) on another Holmes layup, Kenyon closed the quarter on a 15-7 run, included the final six. Diesz started the stretch with an and-one conversion at 1:43.
After Erica Holmes hit a three-ball on Denison's next possession, Diesz scored again and brought the count to 35-28. Kenyon added two more makes - from Diesz and Cera - to bring the tally to 35-32 after three.
In the fourth, Kenyon inched closer. Bussema's layup at 8:57 pulled the Ladies to within two (36-34). Following a Big Red turnover, Kenyon nearly tied it as Cera lobbed a pass to
Griffin Tullis from the sideline, but the alley-oop attempt failed.
Denison followed with a 6-0 run and the Ladies never recovered after that.
The defeat ended Kenyon's season at 19-8 and the careers of Bussema, Cera, Diesz and Dominguez.
