SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team held the Wittenberg University Tigers at bay for 45 minutes on Saturday, but in the final 15, the Ladies' scoring evaporated just in time for Wittenberg's offense to surge ahead. In Kenyon's regular season finale, Wittenberg topped the Ladies 13-11.
The Tigers (11-6) closed on a 6-1 run, including four unanswered goals in the last 15 minutes to take the lead and seal the victory.
With 21:09 left in the second half, Kenyon held a hard-fought 10-7 lead over the Tigers. Wittenberg's late-game resurgence began with sophomore Emily Wadds, who nearly erased the lead on her own with two unassisted goals in just ten seconds.
The match had started out neck-and-neck. Wittenberg's Breanna Donnelly drew first blood thirty seconds into the first half, but Lucy Sommers responded with a Kenyon goal six minutes later.
The two teams continued to trade goals, and the half closed with an unassisted score by
Kat Englert that gave Kenyon a slight 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
Kenyon came into the second half swinging and took a 10-7 lead thanks to two points from Englert and one apiece from
Cassie Hudson-Heck and
Allie McLane before Wittenberg launched its closing act.
The Tigers had just 15 turnovers to the Ladies' 23, scooped up 10 more ground balls and won six more draw controls. Wittenberg turned the possessions into more offensive opportunities, launching 39 shots to Kenyon's 25. Freshman Rachel Bernard led the Tigers on both ends of the field, notching four goals, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
For the Ladies, Englert and McLane powered the offense with five and three goals, respectively. Hudson-Heck supported the attack with three assists and on the defensive end, goalkeeper
Allie Dumas made 17 saves. .
The loss caps off Kenyon's season record at 7-9, its most losses since 2006, and 3-5 in NCAC games.
Cassie Hudson-Heck notched two goals and assisted on three more on Saturday but the Ladies fell
at Wittenberg 13-11 to close their 2017 campaign.
