Deems, Ladies shut out DePauw

GREENCASTLE, In. – Newcomer Suzy Deems turned in her best performance of her young career on Sunday as the Kenyon Ladies field hockey team earned a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win at DePauw University. It marked the fourth-straight regular-season win against the Tigers, a program first.

Kenyon improved to 8-5 overall and moved into sole possession of second place in the NCAC standings with a 7-3 mark.

DePauw controlled first-half action as it held advantages in shots (10-2) and penalty corners (6-1). Despite that, the Ladies held strong, especially from Deems. She notched a half-dozen saves in the period and kept the scoreboard blank until Kenyon broke through.

With less than 12 minutes left until halftime, the Ladies' first shot of the match hit the back of the cage. Gigi Guenther fed fellow sophomore Tara Shetty who scored her fifth goal of the season.

In the second half, offensive play was evened out as both teams attempted four shots.

One of those from DePauw nearly tied the game. At 51:34, Kate Milner fired but her attempt hit the post and allowed the Ladies to stay in front. A little over two minutes later, Milner shot again but Deems denied the attempted equalizer. That was Deems' eighth save of the game, a season-best total.

From there on, the home team never took another shot on goal as the Ladies prevailed.

Kenyon will now have three consecutive home games starting next Saturday, October 20 against Ohio Wesleyan University. The Battling Bishops earned a 2-1 overtime win against the Ladies on September 22.
