GAMBIER, Ohio - On Saturday afternoon, the Kenyon women's soccer team outshot the visiting Thomas More University Saints, 19-6, but the shooting advantage was not enough to see the Ladies to victory. The Saints scored a decisive goal in the second half to win 1-0.
The loss was Kenyon's first since September 8 against Shenandoah University, ending a six-game unbeaten streak.
Kenyon (4-3-3) controlled possession in the first half, but still came up empty-handed after a flurry of frustrating missed opportunities. The Ladies got off 10 shots in the first period while the Saints (3-10) managed just two.
Meredith Rogers found the Ladies' best look early. In the fifth minute, she sent a scorching shot toward the top of the Thomas More frame, but Saints keeper Maddy Kim punched the ball away at the last second.
Meredith Glover and
Samantha Hayes also provided shots on goal later in the half, but Kim again saved both. Overall, she collected five saves before halftime.
The Saints offense began to pick up in the second half. In the 57th minute, Jordan Harley launched two shots in a row at the Kenyon frame. Kenyon goalkeeper
Jillian Countey saved both. The Ladies responded with an offensive run of their own, rattling off five shots in the next 10 minutes, but the match remained scoreless.
Thomas More's Lindsey Brown scored the deciding goal in the 71st minute. On a run up the middle of the field, Brown edged past her defender, aimed for the far post and found net just past the outstretched arms of Countey. The score was Brown's third goal of the season.
Kenyon attempted a comeback in the final 20 minutes to no avail.
Fallon Raviol and
Maddie Ladd combined to notch three more shots for the Ladies, but all three were off target. With 40 seconds to go, Kenyon secured a corner kick and looked for a buzzer-beating equalizer, but Thomas More cleared
Caroline McNeer's cross before a shot could be attempted.
Kim wound up with seven saves on the game. Countey had two.
The Ladies will stay at home for their next match, this time to face a North Coast Athletic Conference opponent. They will kick off against The College of Wooster (7-1-3, NCAC 3-0) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10.
