GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon men's soccer team captured its fourth North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament title in the last five seasons after handling Ohio Wesleyan University by a 4-0 count on Saturday at Mavec Field.
It was the eighth all-time meeting between the two rivals in the NCAC tourney and marked the biggest margin of victory for the Lords.
Almost a year to the day after Kenyon fell in a penalty kick shootout to OWU, the Lords played extremely strong on both ends. Offensively, Kenyon outshot the second-seeded visitors 10-5 and scored four goals for the eleventh time this season. On the defensive end, All-Tournament selections
Bret Lowry (MVP),
Sam Hosmer-Quint and
Greg McNeer allowed just one good shot attempt to the Battling Bishops.
A little over nine minutes in, Kenyon's third shot attempt found the back of the net.
Philippe Stengel drove to the left end line and crossed a pass to a wide-open
David Anderson who scored his eleventh goal of the year.
Just a couple minutes later, Kenyon extended its lead to 2-0.
David Kim's pass from the right side came into the box and after an OWU defender deflected it,
Max Taylor booted home his third goal of the season.
Over the next 34 minutes, Ohio Wesleyan attempted just one shot. That came at 35:20 and Antonio Romanelli's attempt was blocked by the Kenyon defense.
Kenyon added one more goal with under two minutes left in the half. A nifty sequence of headers from
Collyn Carpenter and Hosmer-Quint came to sophomore
Jack Cohen who headed home a shot into the right side.
In the second half, Anderson, who also made the All-Tournament team along with
Brice Koval, extended the Lords' lead to 4-0. His shot in the 58th minute ricocheted off the left post and in. It was the team's 67th goal of the year which ranks second all-time and 14 off the record.
As for OWU, its best shot attempt came at 78:09. Brady Whittekind fired from inside the 18 but Lords senior defender
Keven Duan was in good position and blocked it.
With the win, Kenyon improved to 16-1-2 and earned the NCAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins next weekend. The selection show is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m.
