FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Playing for the first time in 16 days, the Kenyon Ladies basketball team (9-3) earned a 56-32 win against Ramapo College (6-6) during the Fort Lauderdale (FL) Tournament held at Cardinal Gibbons High School. The victory extended the team's winning streak to four games.
Defense was the name of the game for the Ladies who gave up a season-low 32 points while allowing just 21.7 percent shooting to Ramapo. That was the lowest total since giving up a 21.2 percent clip to Wittenberg University on November 30, 2016, a span of 60 games.
Paige Matijasich and
Ellie Schaub each reached double-figure scoring totals with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Additionally,
Sharon Hull contributed nine points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Kenyon made things known right from the start that its defensive ability would give the Roadrunners problems throughout the contest.
In the first quarter, Ramapo shot a mere 14.3 percent (2-of-14). On the other side, the Ladies hit half of their 14 attempts, including three-pointers from
Grace Connery,
Jessica Gerber and Hull. The latter, Hull's make at the buzzer, pushed Kenyon's lead to 17-4.
The Roadrunners were a little better in the second stanza (4-of-10); however, the Ladies kept pace and wound up with a 29-16 lead at halftime. Schaub led Kenyon with six points in the period.
After intermission, Kenyon would once again shut down the Roadrunners. In the third, Ramapo hit just one field goal in nine attempts. That helped the Ladies get up as many as 20 points (39-19) after a
Kiele Anderson free throw with 1:42 left.
The final period saw the Ladies extend their lead to as many as 28 points (51-23) after Hull's jumper with 5:06 remaining.
Kenyon will continue play in the Sunshine State on Sunday against No.10-ranked (D3hoops.com) Messiah College (11-1). It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
