Turnover bug catches Ladies at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – A dozen first-half turnovers by the Kenyon women's lacrosse team helped University of Mount Union get ahead to an 11-3 halftime lead en route to a 18-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Mount Union Stadium.

The Ladies (1-2) got off to a great start within the game's first 80 seconds as Kat Englert and Cassie Hudson-Heck scored, pushing the visitors ahead 2-0.

Down a pair, Mount Union responded with four straight goals. Katie Elder scored twice in a row to tie the game, and at the 19:34 mark, the Purple Raiders capped off their run with a goal from Marjie McNamara.

Sophomore Maggie Grabowski pull the Ladies to within one just 12 seconds later. She dashed up the middle past the defense and scored her sixth goal of the season bringing the count to 4-3.

After that though, the home team really made things tough for the Ladies. Mount Union scored the next seven goals and forced Kenyon into six turnovers near the Purple Raiders' goal.

By halftime, Mount Union had out-shot Kenyon 25-6 and led 11-3. Ashley Bernardi paced the Purple Raiders with four first-half goals and by game's end, she broke a MU single-game record with eight total goals.

In the second half, the home team extended its lead by double-digits. Despite an insurmountable deficit, the Ladies did notch three more goals. Grabowski scored twice while Lucy Somers found the back of the net on a pass from Charley Myers.

Allie Dumas denied a season-high 13 shots while Grabowski led the team in scoring for the second straight game with three goals. As a team, Kenyon turned it over a season-high 23 times.

Kenyon will try to snap its two-game losing streak on Saturday at 3:30 when it hosts Calvin College at McBride Field for another non-conference contest.
