WOOSTER, Ohio – Two of the top scoring offenses in the North Coast Athletic Conference battled it out Wednesday evening at The College of Wooster, where the host Fighting Scots used a balanced attack and a mid-game run to post a 17-12 victory over the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team.
Kenyon, which entered the game as the NCAC's leader with an average of 16.55 goals per game, fell to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Wooster, ranked third in the NCAC with a scoring average of 14.71 goals per game, improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC.
The visiting Ladies opened play with the game's first two goals from
Avery Morgan and
Lucy Somers. Wooster fired back with two, but Morgan scored again and
Cassie Hudson-Heck's goal at the 18:53 gave Kenyon a 4-2 lead.
After the teams traded one more goal each, the Fighting Scots erupted for three straight and nine of the game's next ten goals. The first three scores in the run gave Wooster a 6-5 lead. Kenyon's
Maggie Grabowski tied things up with a goal at the 9:53 mark, but the Fighting Scots closed out the first half with four more goals and a 10-6 advantage.
Two more goals at the start of the second half pushed the Wooster lead to seven. Morgan squeaked in another Kenyon goal, but the Fighting Scots notched two more to take their largest lead, 14-7, with about 24 minutes left in the game.
Kenyon, which out-shot Wooster, 32-27, could not get closer than five goals the rest of the way.
Morgan finished with four goals, while Somers and Grabowski fired in three apiece. Somers also had an assist and Hudson-Heck had two assists to complement her goal.
Wooster's Emma Lawrence led all scorers with five points on five goals. Jenny Grossman and Helena Enders each tacked on two goals and two assists, while the balanced Wooster attack also received three goals each from Megan Healy and Michaela Lawrence.
Kenyon starting goalie,
Allie Dumas, allowed 13 goals and made three saves.
Carina Barnes took her place with about 25 minutes left in the game. She allowed four goals and made two saves. At the other end of the field, Wooster's keeper, Katie Shideler, played the entire 60 minutes, yielded all 12 goals and made ten saves.
The loss was the second straight for Kenyon, which will look to turn things around in its next game, a Saturday home contest against the Wittenberg University Tigers.
