OBERLIN, Ohio - In a back-and-forth match that featured five lead changes and seven ties, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team stunned Oberlin College with a 16-14 victory Saturday. The host Yeowomen were previously unbeaten in five North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contests.
Sophomore
Avery Morgan stuffed the stat sheet for Kenyon (10-5, NCAC 4-3), collecting five goals, one assist, two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Four of her five goals were scored late in the game and kept Kenyon in front of a rallying Oberlin squad.
Kenyon kept Oberlin (9-4, NCAC 5-1) at bay with a blisteringly efficient offensive showing. Of the 28 shots the Ladies levelled against the Yeowomen, 24 were on frame. Although the Ladies lost the draw control battle 20-12, they made up for it by hustling for 20 ground balls, while Oberlin secured 14.
In the first half, the two teams traded blows from the opening draw to the end of the period. Just over two minutes into the game, Hudson-Heck struck first, but the Yeowomen quickly responded with a three-goal run to take an early 3-1 lead, which would be Oberlin's largest lead of the game. The Ladies answered with a three-goal run of their own and retook a narrow 4-3 lead. Kenyon and Oberlin continued to trade shots, with the Ladies making it to halftime with a slight 7-6 edge.
The edge did not last long. A minute into the second half, Natalie Rauchle scored to tie the game. Three minutes later, Oberlin's Leah Crowther found the back of the net and gave the Yeowomen a 10-9 lead.
It would be the last time Oberlin led. Kenyon delivered a haymaker four-goal run in the middle of the second half to take a decisive 13-10 lead. With 17:58 remaining in the game,
Cassie Hudson-Heck opened the run and was soon followed by a goal from
Maggie Grabowski. Morgan then caught fire, scoring four times and assisting on another Kenyon goal from
Katelyn Schwartz.
Oberlin kept the game within reach, but ultimately the Yeowomen could not recover. With just under five minutes remaining, Kyra Aviles found the back of the Kenyon net to cut the Ladies' lead to 15-14. Just a minute later, however, Morgan's final goal put the tally at 16-14 and Kenyon's defense clamped down to keep the Yeowomen scoreless in the final four minutes.
An Oberlin turnover with 20 seconds to go sealed the victory for the Ladies.
Grabowski and Hudson-Heck followed up Morgan's spectacular play by each adding four goals to the Kenyon total.
Rauchle not only led Oberlin, but all scorers with six goals and two assists. Sidney Garvis contributed five goals and an assist of her own, along with a game-high nine draw controls.
In goal, Kenyon's
Allie Dumas got the start, but exited with about 18 minutes left and the Ladies trailing by a goal.
Carina Barnes then came on to close out the game. She earned the win by making four crucial saves in the final 10 minutes of play. For the Yeowomen, Maranda Phillips, who played all 60 minutes, made eight saves.
For their final game of the regular season, the Ladies will return home to McBride Field on April 28 to celebrate Senior Day. They will face off against DePauw University (2-12, NCAC 1-5) at 12 p.m.
