Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Ladies cruise to first conference win

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team needed just one goal for a win Wednesday night at Oberlin College, but the Ladies wound up scoring five times in a shutout victory over the host Yeowomen. The result gave Kenyon its 12th straight win against Oberlin, dating back to the 2012 season.

The game, delayed approximately an hour-and-a-half because of lightning, was the first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season for both teams. The final tally improved Kenyon's overall record to 2-1, while Oberlin slipped to 1-2.

The visiting Ladies started the scoring around the game's 10-minute mark. The goal developed off a penalty corner inserted by senior Hannah Paterakis. Her inbound pass went to the top of the circle, where freshman Sarah Metzmaier corralled it and then pushed it over to sophomore Molly Keen, who was in position to fire her shot into the Oberlin cage.

That one-goal lead held up until the beginning of the second half. About nine minutes in, the Ladies were awarded another penalty corner. The play broke down, but the Ladies stayed in possession. Sophomore Gigi Guenther uncorked a backhand that was saved, but the rebound caused a scrum in front of the goal line, where Olivia O'Connell, another sophomore, emerged with the ball and the Ladies' second goal.

Later in the half, during a ten-minute span, Metzmaier doubled the Ladies' lead. She scored at the 49:08 mark off an assist from sophomore Tara Shetty and then scored again, unassisted, at the 59:47 mark.

With a little more than four minutes left on the game clock, Paterakis finalized the scoring with another unassisted goal.

From start to finish, Kenyon dominated the game. The Ladies outshot the Yeowomen, 26-0, and earned an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.
