Countey comes up big in draw at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies soccer team put forth a strong defensive effort Wednesday, but the offense was unable to push a goal through in the allotted 110 minutes. The same was true on the other side of the field, as the Ladies and the Fighting Scots from The College of Wooster fought to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match at Carl Dale Field.

The draw was the first of the season for Kenyon (6-6-1, 3-1-1 NCAC) and was good enough to keep the Ladies in third place in the NCAC standings. It also ensured that Wooster (9-2-3, 2-1-2 NCAC) remained behind Kenyon and in sole possession of fourth place in the standings.

Wooster dominated possession in the opening half, registering 10 shots and winning five corner kicks. The second half was again largely dominated by Wooster, which ended regulation with 18 shots and nine corners.

Wooster forward Mila Zunich generated the best opportunity in the 13th minute of play. She fired off a shot following Wooster's third corner of the match, but it was turned away by Kenyon junior defender Kiele Anderson. Anderson, senior Annie Hesse and freshman Chloe Webb maintained a strong defensive backline throughout the match, helping keep the sheet clean for the Ladies.

In addition to the solid play of the defensive field players, Kenyon senior goalkeeper Jillian Countey thwarted all Wooster opportunities. She faced 25 shots and tied a career-high in saves with 11. Three of those saves came in the overtime sessions.

The Ladies got their first two shots of the match in the 70th minute, as forwards Maddie Ladd and Fallon Raviol both missed the net on respective opportunities. Two minutes later, a Ladd cross connected with the head of Raviol, but missed the Wooster net wide right by just a few inches.

The Ladies were able to press in the final five minutes of regulation, receiving two corners and a free-kick opportunity within 25 yards, only for those chances to be turned away by Fighting Scots goalkeeper Molly Hutter.

Both extra-time periods were dominated with opportunities for the Fighting Scots, but they never did crack through Countey and the Ladies' defense. Junior forward Samantha Hayes was able to garner the best overtime shot-on-goal opportunity for the Ladies, only for it to be turned away by Hutter, who finished the game with two saves.

Kenyon's next contest is on Saturday, October 26 at Hiram with a scheduled kickoff of 5 p.m.
