Strong defense propels Trine over Ladies

CHICAGO – No. 11 Trine University (D3Hoops.com) held Kenyon College to 5-of-27 (18.5%) shooting in the first half during a 59-40 win during the University of Chicago Midway Classic on Saturday. The game was played at Ratner Athletics Center.

Over the first two quarters, the Thunder held Kenyon to a total of 16 points and took a 29-16 lead into halftime.

Midway through the first, sophomore Grace Connery finished off a Paige Matijasich pass from downtown, bringing the score to 8-5, Thunder. Down a possession, the Ladies weren't able to find a rhythm after Connery's shot, as they went 1-for-5 and committed three turnovers. In that span, Trine went on an 11-4 run and after Kaylee Argyle's three-ball with 33 seconds left, led 19-9.

In the second quarter, Trine pulled away. Ellie Schaub led off the stanza with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 19-12. However, Kenyon scored just four more points the rest of the period and hit 1-of-12. With the Ladies' offense reeling, Trine went up double digits (25-14) at 5:49 after Kelsy Taylor's jumper. By halftime, the Thunder led 29-16 after an Amanda Carroll layup.

Following halftime intermission, the Ladies did shoot better, hitting 47.8 percent from the field. However, Trine's double-digit lead could not be overcome.

Connery and Carroll ended the game with 12 points each, while Schaub pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. As a team, the Ladies did commit 20 turnovers leading to 18 Trine points.

Tomorrow at 3:00 EST, the Ladies will face the host Maroons (3-2) who previously beat Trine, 79-70 on Friday.
