GREENCASTLE, Ind. – For the second time in the last five days, the DePauw University Tigers scored a late goal to defeat the Kenyon College women's soccer team. Wednesday, in the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, senior Alex Berkley scored with less than three minutes left, giving the Tigers a 2-1 win and bringing to an end the Ladies' season.
Kenyon entered the conference's four-team postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed. The loss to top-seeded DePauw finalizes the Ladies' record at 8-8-1. The win pushed DePauw to 12-5-2 and into the NCAC Tournament final, a game in which the Tigers will host the No. 3-seed College of Wooster on Saturday.
Wednesday's game-winner hit the Kenyon net at the 87:03 mark. A crossing pass from the right side of the Kenyon zone deflected off a Kenyon defender and settled at Berkley's feet. She ripped a shot from straightaway, inside the box. Kenyon goalkeeper
Jillian Countey dove to her right to make the stop, but the ball got past her, giving Berkley her eighth goal of the season.
Back in the first half of play, DePauw notched the game's first goal. Junior Mary Goodale scored it in the 28th minute on what appeared to be an off-target crossing pass that sailed over the head of Countey.
DePauw, which outshot Kenyon 8-3 in the first half and 19-8 for the game, held on to that 1-0 lead for the next 50 minutes. It wasn't until the 78th minute that the Kenyon offense finally broke through with an unassisted goal from junior
Samantha Hayes. It was her third of the season.
About two minutes after that, Kenyon got another good look. Again, it was Hayes, but her attempt flew wide right and turned out to be the last chance the Ladies could generate.
Countey, one of seven Kenyon seniors, ended up making eight saves in her final game for the Ladies.
