Ladies’ offensive depth leads to blowout win

TIFFIN, Ohio – Seven different Kenyon Ladies lacrosse players scored multiple goals on Saturday as the team won its season opener, 20-1, at Heidelberg University.

Kenyon's 20-goal output was its most in a season opener in the NCAC era (1984-present), as well.

Julia Mahoney and Lucy Somers led the team with four goals apiece. For Mahoney, a sophomore, her total was a career-high. Additionally, Cassie Hudson-Heck and Alexis Redford-Maung Maung each contributed two goals and an assist.

As a team, the Ladies led in shots (50-6), ground balls (33-20) and held an 18-4 advantage in draw controls.

In the first half, Kenyon raced out by scoring the game's first 12 goals. A little over a minute in, Avery Morgan got the team on the scoreboard. At the 22:49 mark, Morgan scored again, this time on a free-position attempt that pushed the Ladies' lead to 5-0.

A bit later, goals by Jayne Gelman and Mahoney extended the lead to 13-0 with 3:49 remaining until the break.

Heidelberg, who attempted just three shots in each half, found its first tally of the season with 90 seconds left after Angela Lulejian scored. That turned out to be the Student Princes only goal of the game.

In the second half, Mahoney tallied two more goals, as did Somers. Also contributing were Maggie Grabowski, who registered two goals and a game-high seven draw controls, and Gelman and Redford-Maung Maung who scored a goal for Kenyon.

While she didn't face many shots, senior Carina Barnes notched two saves in the win.

Competition will take a step up next week for Kenyon. On February 23, the Ladies will host John Carroll University at McBride Field starting at 1 p.m.
