Fast start helps Wooster stay ahead of Ladies

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (16-1) got out to a big first-half lead and fended off a couple Kenyon College comeback attempts during a 16-10 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament victory at John P. Papp Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Wooster advanced to play in the tournament final while the Ladies ended their season with a 13-5 record.

Eighty seconds into competition, Wooster had scored twice on goals from Ashley Boersma and Alexa Mellis. The home squad later extended that advantage to 7-1 as Boersma and Megan Healy each scored twice during a 4-0 spurt.

Despite the dismal start, Kenyon rallied to pull within two by halftime. In the final 6:32, the Ladies outscored Wooster 5-1. The stretch started as Lucy Somers fed fellow senior Cassie Hudson-Heck. Following goals from Maggie Grabowski and Somers, Hudson-Heck tallied the final two of the half and left the Ladies down 8-6.

After the break, Wooster got off to another decent start, scoring the first three goals of the second stanza. Emma Lawrence contributed a pair while Mellis added the other. Despite that, Kenyon added one more spurt to pull close.

Down 11-6 with just under 24 minutes remaining, Avery Morgan, Somers, and Grabowski each scored to pull the scoreboard to within two again, 11-9. The Ladies won the next draw control; however, a caused turnover by Lawrence left that Kenyon possession empty.

Wooster then followed with the game-clinching run as it scored five unanswered.

By game's end, Somers had contributed six points on a trio of goals and assists. That moved her single-season total to 95, besting the previous program record of 94 set by Frankie De Lavis in 2007. Additionally, Grabowski broke her own school record as she attained 147 draw controls (133 in 2018). As a team, the Ladies tallied 403 points and 283 goals, both single-season records.
