Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies escape Allegheny with 74-73 win

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Five different Kenyon College women's basketball players scored in double-figures as the team edged Allegheny College 74-73 on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Wise Center.

The win boosted the team's record to 6-9 and 3-4 in the league.

Scoring was at a minimum through the first six minutes before Allegheny seized a 9-4 advantage after a three-pointer from Juliana Skowron. Ladies sophomores Madelyn Anderson and Greta Propp helped the team respond just a bit after that.

At 2:26, Anderson got clear from along the right side and drilled a three-ball to tie the game at 9. Two possessions later, Paige Matijasich dished to Propp in the left corner and the Belmont, Massachusetts native swished through the shot giving Kenyon its first lead.

After the first, it was a one-point, 12-11, Kenyon advantage. Following a short break, the two teams came back to turn in an exciting second stanza.

Allegheny's Zoe Youdell tied the affair at 15 a little over two minutes in and sparked a 10-2 Gators run. By the 6:52 mark, the hosts were up 23-17 after a free throw from Rylee Donovan.

The Ladies then got into a groove to regain the lead. Down by six, Propp and Grace Connery hit back-to-back layups before an Ellie Schaub layup moved Kenyon ahead 25-23 with about four minutes left. In the final 21 seconds, Schaub tallied another score to push the Ladies up 32-30. However, a three-ball from Donovan with four ticks remaining gave the Gators a 33-32 halftime lead.

In the second quarter, both teams shot above 45 percent.

After halftime, the Ladies' offense turned it up a notch. Matijasich scored nine in the quarter while Anderson and Amanda Carroll each tallied six. As a team, the Ladies outscored the hosts 28-19, shot 52.9 percent from the field, 80 percent from three and hit all six of their free throws.

Those marks helped Kenyon go up as many as eight points on two different occasions.

Leading 60-52 going into the fourth period, the Ladies extended their lead to double digits twice. The last came at 7:03 when Schaub scored a three-ball on a pass from newcomer Katie Orefice. It was 68-58 Ladies after that make.

After that, Allegheny was able to come back after some out-of-rhythm shots from Kenyon. Down 10, the Gators went on an 8-0 run to pull the game to 68-66 after a free throw from Skowron at 5:30. Then in the final 15 seconds, Donovan made a free throw, and then rebounded her own miss on the second attempt and scored from in front of the hoop. That shot gave the Gators a 73-72 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Matijasich went solo against the Gators' defense, drew a foul with two seconds and converted both free throws to move the scoreboard to 74-73, Ladies. Allegheny had one last chance, but a missed three from Donovan ended the game.

Schaub (16), Matijasich (13), Connery (13), Anderson (11) and Carroll (10) were the five that led Kenyon. Additionally, the Ladies' bench outscored the Gators' 20-2.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date against Ohio Wesleyan University on January 15 at 6 p.m.
