Ladies long-range shooting nets another win

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies used an accurate three-point attack to defeat the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents, 72-66, in Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's basketball game at Tomsich Arena.

Throughout the contest, Kenyon drained 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) long-range attempts. Both Paige Matijasich and Ellie Schaub racked up a trio of three-pointers, while Grace Connery knocked down a pair. Matijasich led all scorers with 24 points. She also tallied game-highs of eight rebounds and four assists. Schaub finished with 17 points. Both she and Matijasich also had four steals apiece.

Kenyon (10-13)  jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the opening eight minutes of the contest before the Presidents went on a 13-0 run that leveled the game at 19-19 just one minute into the second quarter. The Ladies, utilizing nine points from Matijasich, were able to bounce back and went into the half leading the Presidents 35-31.

Schaub opened the scoring in the second half with her second three-pointer of the game, which was bookended by a Matijasich three to give the Ladies a seven-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

As the game neared a conclusion, the Presidents (15-8) fought their way back, taking a 64-63 edge following two free throws from Alie Seto. With just 2:31 remaining, that was just the second lead of the game for the Presidents.

About a minute later, Madelyn Anderson hit a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Ladies the lead once again. Seto answered with two more free throws on the following possession and leveled the game at 66. On Kenyon's next trip down the floor, Matijasich buried her final three-pointer, giving the Ladies the lead for good.

Seto led Washington and Jefferson with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Hannah Johnston added 14 to the Presidents' total.

While the Ladies were hot from the outside, the Presidents were just 4-of-20 (20.0 percent).

Kenyon now faces its final week of the regular season with a conference matchup at Ohio Wesleyan University at 6 p.m. Wednesday and then back home Saturday to host Allegheny College.
