Late surge pushes Gators past Ladies

GAMBIER, Ohio – In the final contest of the regular season, the Kenyon College women's basketball team held a lead over the visiting Allegheny College Gators for more than 90 percent of the game. The Gators, however, took their first lead with 1:47 left and held on for a 67-63 win during a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup at Tomsich Arena.

The Ladies (10-15, 6-10 NCAC) got things rolling early. Sophomore Greta Propp and senior Paige Matijasich recorded the first eight Ladies' points. Junior Ellie Schaub later drained a three-pointer to give Kenyon a 16-3 advantage.

The Gators (11-14, 7-9 NCAC) were able to slowly claw back into the game, getting to the end of the first quarter with an 18-10 lead and then cutting the margin to six, at 33-27, by the halftime intermission.

Allegheny kept chipping away in the second half and the Ladies' lead was cut to three with 7:33 remaining in the third quarter. With the lead now in jeopardy, the Ladies came to life with a 15-8 run that closed out the quarter. During the run, Madelyn Anderson scored five points and Amanda Carroll scored four, pushing Kenyon into the final frame with a 51-40 lead.

Julianna Skowron and Zoe Youdell powered the Gators through the early parts of the fourth quarter, pulling Allegheny within four points. Rylee Donovan then posted eight straight points to tie the game at 61-61. A minute later, Youdell dropped in a fast-break layup to give the Gators the lead for good.

Matijasich followed that Allegheny possession with two free throws, before the Gators went on to score the final seven points of the game.

Skowron led all players with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Donovan added 22 points to the Allegheny total and Youdell chipped in with 11.

Matijasich, Kenyon's lone senior, poured in 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds and six assists. Carroll had nine points, while Schaub and Katie Orefice scored seven apiece.

The loss dropped Kenyon down to the No. 7 seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament. The Ladies will head to Denison University, the No. 2 seed, on Tuesday evening for a first-round game.
