Ladies bounce back with win at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey bounced back with a 3-1 road win against Wittenberg University on Sunday after a 3-1 home loss to Denison on Saturday.

The first quarter of action proved to be a defensive battle to start. Kenyon's first shots came with just over three minutes remaining in the first period when the Ladies set up for a penalty corner taken by Abby Timmins. After a few passes, Isabella Meneguzzi sent a shot toward goal only for it to be saved by Wittenberg goalkeeper Emma Hurguy. Bella Kern positioned herself to take a shot off the rebound, but her attempt went wide. The score remained deadlocked at zero until the 13:43 mark when the Tigers' Reagan Mezzulli found an open Allison Ormsby on the back side to put their team up by one.

The Ladies looked to tie the game up within the first minutes of the second quarter. Sarah Metzmaier got into the circle with a defender on her. Metzmaier created space for herself and slapped a shot, but it went just past the far post. The Ladies' next opportunity came a few moments later when Hanna Paprotna sent a shot toward Hurguy. After a deflection by a Tiger defender, Hurguy redirected the ball and stopped the Kenyon threat. At the half, the stats for both teams were almost identical but Wittenberg held a 1-0 lead.

Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Bella Kern intercepted a pass from the Tiger defense. Kern took the ball on the breakaway into the circle and hooked her shot around the stick of a diving Hurguy. The junior forward found her way to the scoresheet again in the 37th minute. Jacqueline McKeown found her way into the circle but lost the ball. Orcin Akman controlled the loose ball and passed to a wide open Kern in the middle of the circle to hammer in the go-ahead goal. The Ladies added three more shots on goal as they took a 2-1 lead into the final period.

In the 48th minute, Sarah Metzmaier beat two defenders as she advanced into the shooting circle. Metzmaier's shot beat Hurguy and stretched the Ladies lead to 3-1. The Kenyon defense remained strong throughout the rest of the game as they allowed only one shot in the second half. The Ladies out shot the Tigers 13-4 and an 8-3 in shots on goal.

Kenyon continues conference play on the road as they go to Greencastle, Indiana to take on DePauw on Saturday.
