Ladies slip past Battling Bishops 1-0

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After inclimate weather postponed the matchup between Kenyon College and Ohio Wesleyan University, the Ladies (11-4, 5-1) defeated the Battling Bishops (6-5, 3-3) 1-0 on a rainy Monday afternoon.

In the opening 90 seconds, Ohio Wesleyan earned their first penalty corner of the game. OWU's Astrid Koek shot from the top of the shooting circle off the pass. Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan came off her line to kick the ball away, ending the Bishop attack. Ohio Wesleyan looked to take the lead again in the third minute when Zoe Nelson ripped a shot. Doan kicked the ball away once again, keeping the game scoreless. After one period of play, the game remained tied 0-0.

After Kenyon resumed play on a free hit, Isabella Meneguzzi fired a pass toward the Bishop cage when Bella Kern deflected the ball past Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Meg McCarthy for the game's lone goal. Kenyon continued to pressure McCarthy as the Ladies placed four more shots on goal in the quarter. As the rain started to increase, the Ladies held on to a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Ohio Wesleyan looked to tie the game up. Payton Doan registered her third save of the game when she blocked another Bishop shot. After the Ladies conceded a penalty corner, Doan batted a shot out of the air to keep her team ahead 1-0. In the 41st minute, the Kenyon defense blocked another Ohio Wesleyan shot. The Ladies carried their 1-0 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter continued to be a defensive battle as Kenyon looked to add on to their advantage and Ohio Wesleyan looked to level the score. In the closing 60 seconds of the game, the Bishops earned back-to-back penalty corners. With 30 seconds to go, Payton Doan made her final save of the day. Ohio Wesleyan earned a penalty corner in the final 10 seconds, but the Kenyon defense remained strong, holding the Bishops off.

The Ladies host their final regular season home contest against Oberlin College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
