Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Denison deals Kenyon its first conference loss

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- A well-played first half from the Kenyon College women's soccer team was overshadowed by a second half in which Denison University took over. The host Big Red tallied a pair of goals in that second stanza and went on to deal the Ladies a 3-0 loss.

It was the first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) loss of the season for Kenyon, which slipped to 5-7-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference action. On the other side of the field, Denison improved to 7-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in NCAC contests.

As the teams battled back-and-forth for about 40 minutes, the game's first goal developed just before the halftime break. With 2:30 showing on the clock, Denison's Dulcie Heyes booted a long cross from the right side. Her pass floated to the center of the Kenyon goal mouth. That's where Callie Davis slipped a defender and headed the ball into the twine.

The goal was a bit of a back-breaker for the Kenyon team, which had played Denison evenly throughout the majority of the first half. By the time they reached the intermission, each team had seven shots.

From there, however, Denison began to take control. The Big Red managed the first four shots of the second half. The third of those four ended up crossing the Kenyon goal line. That scoring play came in the 58th minute, as Kenyon was clearing a Denison corner. The clear, however, went to Denison's Sydney Ludes, who collected it and, from about 20 yards out, punted the ball back through the Kenyon box. Somehow it got through traffic untouched and found Abby King on the far left side, where she redirected it into the Kenyon goal.

With less than 11 minutes left in the game, Denison tacked on one more. It came from Eliza Roach, who unleashed a long shot, from outside the box, that found its way into the top left corner of the goal.

After playing an even first half, the Ladies were outshot 9-2 in the second half of play. Overall, Denison posted a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corners.

The Ladies, who have alternated wins and losses over their last six games, will next travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. conference contest with the Battling Bishops (6-3-3, 1-2-0 NCAC).
