Lords advance with 4-1 win over Catholic

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. -- Kenyon College's men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with their 4-1 win over The Catholic University of America.

The first half of action saw Kenyon take seven shots but only two of those landing on goal. The Lords held the Cardinals to three shots in the opening half. Although both teams earned four corners each, neither team could find the back of the net.

After the scoreless first half, the Lords started the scoring in the 47th minute. After Gerardo Martinez's corner got punched away by Catholic goalkeeper Austin Coron, Scott Upton controlled the loose ball and passed to Sebastian Gaese. Gaese took a step inside and slipped the ball past Coron at the post.

A minute and a half later, Martinez found Mac Nardiello-Smith advancing up the field. After a few touches, Nardiello-Smith placed a shot at the back post from 20-yards out. The shot caught Coron off guard as it went past him again.

In the 58th minute, Coron came off his line to challenge Sam Carson for the ball but played the player instead of the ball. Coron received a red card for his challenge and the Cardinals played the remainder of the contest a man down. Following the goalkeeper change, Troy Young deflected Nardiello-Smith's cross across goal but Gaese cleaned up the rebound for his second goal of the game.

Catholic cut the lead to two goals in the 60th minute. Paul Egan put a shot past Jack Pedreschi after a free kick couldn't be controlled in the box. The Lords regained their three goal advantage in the 77th minute. Alem Duratovic gathered the throw in just inside the 18-yard box. Duratovic's shot cleared Young easily to put Kenyon up 4-1.

The Lords move on to play Messiah University at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
