No. 3 Trine deals Kenyon a lopsided loss

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Kenyon College women's basketball team got a first-hand look at why the Trine University Thunder is ranked No. 3 in a preseason national pool. Saturday night at the MTI Center, the Thunder opened the four-team Cameron Hospital Classic by handing the Ladies a 93-33 defeat.

Trine (1-0) was dominant on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the Thunder shot 53.5 percent (38-of-71). Defensively, they held the Ladies to 26.2 percent shooting (11-of-42) and converted 29 Kenyon turnovers into 39 points.

The offense that Kenyon could muster came mainly from junior guard Katie Orefice. She scored a team-high 13 points. Greta Propp scored eight and Grace Connery chipped in with six.

The Thunder had 15 different players score points. They were led by Rachel Stewart's 16 points. Tara Bieniewicz scored 15 and Kelsy Taylor rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

Play started out slow in the first quarter as Trine held just a 7-4 lead seven minutes into the contest. A 7-0 run soon followed for the Thunder as they closed out the quarter with an 18-7 advantage.

Things opened up and got away from Kenyon in the second quarter. Trine blitzed the Ladies with a 17-5 run. Bieniewicz dropped in a pair of three-pointers during the run, while Stewart scored eight of her points in the quarter, which concluded with the Thunder owning a 43-17 lead.

Not much changed in the second half. Trine outscored Kenyon 27-8 in the third quarter and then 23-8 in the fourth. The final 60-point margin was the largest of the contest.

Kenyon (0-2) returns to the MTI Center tomorrow to play its second game of the Cameron Hospital Classic against Albion College. Prior to Kenyon's game against Trine, Albion played Denison University and pulled out a 67-45 win over the Big Red.
