Ladies fall in heartbreaking fashion

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team tied The College of Wooster 0-0 in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) semifinal match Tuesday. The Fighting Scots advance to the championship game after defeating the Ladies 10-9 in the penalty shootout.

The first half saw both teams earn opportunities for shots. Leah Anderson registered her first save of the game in the 11th minute. Wooster's Naomi Mann placed a shot on goal that Anderson easily saved and cleared the Fighting Scots threat. Kenyon's first shot on goal came in the 27th minute when Sadie Gould's header found its way on target, but Wooster goalkeeper Amanda Flory reacted quickly to stop the shot. After the first half, Wooster held a 14-5 advantage in shots over Kenyon while Anderson tallied five saves for the Ladies.

Early in the second half, Kit Ross sent a shot toward goal from 20-yards out. Flory came off her line to punch the ball away, keeping the game scoreless. Minutes later, Samantha Hayes found Olivia Dion on a run past the Wooster back line. Dion dribbled to the edge of the 18-yard box when she ripped a shot as Amanda Flory came off her line. Flory leaped to make the save before it could go over her head. On the following corner kick, Dion placed a header at the back post when Flory made a diving save as the ball reached the goal line. With less than 30 seconds to go in regulation, Olivia Carriero found herself free inside the 18-yard box, but her shot went past the post, sending both teams to overtime.

In the first overtime period, Wooster shot four times but none found the goal while Kenyon registered one off target shot. In the second overtime period, Kenyon had a chance to win the game after Samantha Hayes centered the ball to Chloe Webb in the box, but Webb's shot off the cross went over the crossbar. Just under five minutes remaining, Hayes beat her defender in the box but watched her shot saved by Flory. In the final minute of overtime, the Ladies earned a corner kick. After Wooster cleared the initial pass, Webb sent in another ball to the box. Flory punched Morgan Baker's shot over the crossbar as the clock ticked down. After 110 minutes of play, the Scots and Ladies remained scoreless.

In the penalty shootout, each team scored on their first nine chances. The Ladies missed their tenth opportunity. Wooster's Maggie Stieby converted the final penalty kick for the Scots to end the shootout, 10-9.

The Ladies finish the season 8-8-2 overall record and 5-2-1 conference record with an appearance in the conference tournament. Wooster advances to the NCAC tournament championship on Saturday and awaits the winner of Denison University and Wittenberg University.
