Ladies' comeback falls short against Big Red

GAMBIER – The Kenyon Ladies made a furious fourth quarter comeback, but it was not quite enough to topple the Denison University Big Red. Denison got off to a hot start and never looked back, taking the contest 66-59 in a game between North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rivals.

In the first quarter, the Big Red connected on four three-point attempts to give them an early 12-4 lead. On offense, Denison consistently worked the ball inside and found shooters on the perimeter. The first quarter ended with Denison up 19-10, but the Ladies ended on a 4-0 run with two buckets by Katie Orefice, scoring eight points during the period.

The Big Red's hot shooting touch started to run cold in the second quarter, as they only went 1-6 from outside the arc. However, the Ladies also struggled to put the ball through the bucket. For the half, Kenyon shot just 32.1 percent from the field. The Ladies could not narrow their deficit, even despite seven more points from Orefice, and trailed 32-21 at the half.

The tough sledding continued for Kenyon in the third quarter. The Ladies never trailed by fewer than nine points, and a 12-5 run to close the quarter from Denison put Kenyon in a 54-37 hole. The Big Red shot over fifty percent in the third quarter, putting up an offensive barrage that the Ladies simply could not keep up with.

The fourth quarter began much more auspiciously for the Ladies, who started on a 10-3 run including treys from Grace Connery and Madelyn Anderson. That run put Kenyon down by ten points with 5:34 left in the game. The Ladies stayed hot from there. Two big time jumpers from Orefice brought the score to 57-51, putting the Ladies well within striking distance, with a little under three minutes left to play. The atmosphere in Tomsich Arena grew electric as the Ladies attempted to even the score. However, that proved to be too little time for the Ladies to stage a comeback, as they ultimately fell 66-59.

Orefice led Kenyon with 21 points and three assists to go along with three steals. Connery led the Ladies with nine rebounds. Orefice, Connery, and Greta Propp each played all forty minutes of the game.

With the loss, Kenyon falls to 3-7 and 1-3 in conference play while Denison improves to 4-6, 3-1 in NCAC action. The Ladies hit the road to take on Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, December 18. That game tips off at 1 p.m.
