Spring sports schedules announced

With a focus on returning to intercollegiate varsity athletics competition in a safe, responsible manner, the Kenyon College Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation released Monday its slate of spring sports schedules.

The schedules center on a coordinated effort to align active teams from North Coast Athletic Conference institutions into weeklong pairings, avoiding the crossover of multiple teams that a typical conference schedule would include.

Additionally, participating NCAC institutions were split into two divisions. Kenyon's division for baseball, softball, golf, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse includes Allegheny College, Hiram College and The College of Wooster. For men's and women's tennis, Kenyon's division includes, Allegheny, Wooster and Denison University.

In an email sent to all employees and students this morning, Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation, Jill McCartney wrote, "We also have worked closely with our coaches to develop deliberate and measured plans to return to sports this spring, drawing on guidance from the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the North Coast Athletic Conference. It is our hope that our spring sports teams will be able to participate in divisional conference competitions — those that do not require overnight travel — along with a few non-division contests with nearby teams.

"Our plans include strict guidelines for masking, social distancing and health assessments. Athletes will practice in assigned pods under the supervision of a coach. Group interaction will be introduced progressively over five weeks, with the emphasis on best practices to reduce spread of COVID-19."

As with everything else during this pandemic, the newly released schedules are subject to change.

In accordance with campus policy, no visitors will be permitted at Kenyon athletics events. Other polices regarding game attendance for on-campus students and staff, team travel, locker room use, athletic training, live game coverage, etc., are presently being carefully considered with decisions coming later.
