Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gould’s goal gives Kenyon an overtime win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- An overtime goal that developed off a corner kick gave the Kenyon College women's soccer team a 1-0 home victory against the John Carroll University Blue Streaks on Wednesday evening at Mavec Field.

Four minutes and eight seconds into the overtime, Olivia Carriero, a junior, set up for the corner on the right side of the field. When she put the ball in play it came down in the middle of the Blue Streaks' box. Sophomore Sadie Gould split two defenders and managed to get her right foot on it. From there, the ball rolled into the lower left corner of the John Carroll net.

The goal was Gould's team-leading third of the season. The assist was Carriero's first of the season.

Kenyon ended up out-shooting John Carroll, 22-9, so it was just a matter of time before all that knocking would break down the door.

In the first half, Kenyon piled up a 9-3 advantage in shots, but just four of those nine were on goal. Gould had two chances in the half, but they were steered aside by John Carroll goalkeeper Danielle DelGuidice. A minute after Gould's first shot, teammate Morgan Baker had a good look, but her shot traveled a bit too far to the right.

Locked in the scoreless tie, the teams went into the second half with John Carroll making the first threat. About four minutes in, Brittany Dufalla ripped a shot from the right side at a sharp angle. Kenyon goalkeeper Leah Anderson, however, was in position to reach up and make the save.

From there the teams traded opportunities with the Ladies getting the better of it. Neither squad, however, developed any can't-miss chances. As regulation came to a close, the Ladies owned an 18-9 advantage in shots, but the scoreboard still read 0-0.

In overtime, Gould started things off with a decent shot that veered right. The Ladies kept the pressure on from there, earning three corners in the extra frame, with the last of the three setting the stage for the game-winner.

The victory brought to a close the Ladies' six-game home stand to start the season. They'll next take to the road with a 2-4 record to face Franklin College on Saturday.

John Carroll, which won its previous four games, fell to 4-2 with the loss.
