Carson’s goal lifts Lords over Pioneers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team defeated Marietta College 2-1 at home on a rainy Wednesday evening.

Although Gambier saw steady rain all day, Kenyon and Marietta continued as scheduled with the game being moved from Mavec Field's natural surface to the Field at Benson Bowl's artificial surface.

The Lords came out sharp and pressured the Marietta back line into rushed passes in the opening minutes despite the wet field conditions and steady shower of rain. After the Lords gained possession near midfield, a group of Kenyon players flooded the box. After an initial shot by Gerardo Martinez, Sebastian Gaese buried the rebound in the back of the Marietta goal.

Kenyon retained their 1-0 lead until the 32nd minute when Marietta's Jacob Roberto found the back of the net. The two teams went to halftime tied at one.

The Lords continued to pressure the Pioneers in the second half. In the 58th minute, Scott Upton gathered himself off a pass from his back line and moved into open space in the middle of the field. After Upton found an open Sam Carson making a run on the sideline, Carson took possession near the 18-yard box with a defender closing. The senior forward placed a shot on goal toward Marietta goalkeeper Ryan Riccillo, but the ball deflected off the head of a Marietta defender into the goal. Both teams continued to play aggressively as the pace of play increased, but Kenyon outlasted the Marietta attack.

The Lords start conference action on Saturday at home against Allegheny College with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
