Lazarus goal seals a 1-1 tie with Hanover

Box Score HANOVER, Ind. -- The Kenyon College Lords competed in an intense soccer contest with the Hanover College Panthers on Saturday afternoon. The game went to double overtime and ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw after neither team was able to convert in the additional periods.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams' defenses coming up big on multiple occasions. Hanover, however, was able to find the back of the net at the 31:55 mark and maintained that 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Both teams took five shots in the evenly-played first half.

The second half was similar, as neither team could quite find a way to score despite putting up good pressure. Kenyon finally was able to seize advantage in the 67th minute, after a Panthers foul set up a penalty kick. First-year midfielder Jacob Lazarus converted and the Lords were able to knot the game 1-1.

The Lords held a 6-2 advantage in shots taken in the second half, but Hanover goalie Luciano Salemi came up big to preserve the tie. Salemi finished the game with six saves. Though the Lords threatened near the end of the half, their efforts were to no avail.

The first overtime period was somewhat uneventful, with the Lords' Gerardo Martinez the only player on either team to even get a shot off. In the second overtime Kenyon dominated possession and had a few opportunities, but could never quite puncture the Panthers' resolute backline.

With the draw, Kenyon moved to 0-1-1 for the season. The Lords will be back in action tomorrow, when they square off with Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky at 2 p.m.
