Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies win nail-biter over Gators

GAMBIER, Ohio – In an incredibly hard-fought game between two North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foes, the Kenyon College women's basketball team edged out the Allegeheny College Gators thanks to some late game heroics from Katie Orefice. The Ladies improve to 5-12 overall and 3-5 in NCAC action.

The Ladies looked sharp from the opening tip, starting with a 6-0 run including buckets by Greta Propp and Orefice. Defense was also key to Kenyon's quick start. The Gators struggled to penetrate the Ladies off the dribble, forced to rely on long passes and giving them few open looks. While the Gators began to find some rhythm as the quarter went on, the Ladies held a 20-15 advantage after the first frame. Kenyon's strong start was propelled by excellent shooting, with a 57.1 field goal percentage, including going 2-5 on three-point shots, for the quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, it began to look like the Ladies might cruise to a victory. Orefice nailed a three-point shot with 3:18 left in the half to put Kenyon up 32-22, their largest lead of the game. The final three minutes of the half, however, were a different story. The Ladies committed four turnovers and suddenly could not get shots to fall as the Gators began a run of their own. At the half, the Ladies clinged to a 34-30, putting Allegheny within striking distance heading into the third quarter.

Despite the narrow lead, the Ladies appeared to be in control at the start of the second half, holding a comfortable 44-38 lead with 5:25. From there, the tide began to turn in favor of Allegheny. The Gators went on a 13-6 run to take their first lead of the contest, 51-50, and added another bucket on a buzzer-beating layup by Alexis Caldwell to put them up three heading into the fourth quarter.

The energy heading into the fourth quarter was intense on both sides and the play on the court backed that up. While Allegheny maintained their lead in the early going, it never stretched beyond four points, with the Ladies staying close. With 4:38 left in the game, Grace Connery buried a shot from beyond the arc to give Kenyon 63-61. The Gators were quick to respond with a three of their own followed by a layup to nudge them back ahead by three once more. But the Ladies, showing some fight, tied things up again at 66-66 on a floater by Orefice with two minutes to go.

A driving layup by Orefice pushed Kenyon up 68-66, but free throws put the Gators back up 69-68. In what started to become a free-throw shooting contest, Orefice made a pair followed by Claudia Cook's two, sealing a thrilling 72-69 win. Orefice paced Kenyon in scoring with 21 points, one of four Ladies to score in double figures. Cooke hauled in 13 rebounds.

The Ladies look to extend their winning steak on Wednesday, January 26 when they take on The College of Wooster. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
