Owls open swim season in two locations

CLEVELAND and ATHENS, Ohio  -- The Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team opened the season and two different meets this week. The Owls sent divers to compete at The Fletch College Invitational at Ohio University, while the swimmers headed to Cleveland State University to square off against the host Vikings, as well as the Bonnies from Saint Bonaventure University.

In terms of scores, at Cleveland State, Kenyon posted a 196-83 win over the Vikings and a 181-99 triumph over Saint Bonaventure. Diving at Ohio was an individual event, so no team scores were kept.

At Ohio, Kenyon's top diver was junior Katarina Ilic. In a field of 29 competitors, she placed 11th on the three-meter board, racking up a score of 200.60. She did even better on the one-meter, placing sixth with a score of 215.55. Bryn Tiernan placed 20th on the one-meter and Claire Fergusson placed 21st. Back in the three-meter competition, Fergusson, Naomi Kennel and Tiernan placed 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively.

At Cleveland State, senior Olivia Smith led the way for Kenyon. She started her day by leading the Owls' winning 200-yard medley relay team that clocked in at 1:45.09. Joining her in that race was Jennah Fadely, Celia Ford and Alexandra White.

After the relay, Smith went on to win the 100-yard backstroke, as well as the 100-yard butterfly (56.42).

Fadely, a sophomore, also had a pair of individual-event wins for Kenyon. She claimed the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.20) and went on to win the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.40).

White, who was a part of that winning relay, also chalked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle (23.79).

Kenyon had four other individual-event winners. That list included Kira Bowling in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:48.79), Ania Axas in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.91), Caleigh Wukitch in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.49) and Gabrielle Wei in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.99).

The Owls now take an extended break from competition. They get back in the pool on Friday, November 4, when they host Ohio Wesleyan University at 6 p.m.
