Kenyon hands Hiram half a dozen in win

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Owls needed just 32 minutes to double their season's high-water mark for goals in a game, taking an early 4-0 lead before collecting a 6-0 win against Hiram College (2-12-1, 0-5 NCAC). The win boosted the Owls' record to 5-5-4 and 3-1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, helping Kenyon maintain its hold on the fourth spot in the standings.

Hiram took the match's first shot and forced Leah Anderson to make a save, but it was all Kenyon from that point forward. The Owls took advantage of some good fortune in the ninth minute after a near-miss on an open look that bounced off the crossbar. Fortunately for Kenyon, Jenna Michel was in a perfect position to corral the rebound and tap the ball into the net, putting the visitors up 1-0 in the ninth minute.

Kenyon's next five shots were on target, and the persistent attack paid off in the 22nd minute. Michel was on the assisting end of a pass that found Kit Ross just on the outside of the Terriers' box, and Ross rocketed a ball into the top right side of the net that doubled Kenyon's lead.

Eun Hae Lillig and Alex Sokolik quickly combined to make it a 4-0 game with goals in the 29th and 32nd minutes, respectively. Lillig took charge and sliced through the Hiram defense before finding an opening on the right side and lifting a high shot over the head of the keeper and into the goal. Sokolik had a similar story on the opposite side, getting deep after a nice lobbed pass from Jackie Thompson and squeezing one past the keeper. Lillig's third goal marked a season-high for the Owls, a team that had notched a pair of goals on three occasions.

Anderson made a save on Hiram's second shot in the 38th minute, but it was an easy scoop for the senior keeper. The Owls maintained the momentum into the second frame, taking the first 13 shots of the half.

It was on Kenyon's first attempt of the period, however, that put the Owls up 5-0. Talulla Sheridan streaked down the left side of the field in the 47th minute, beating the Terriers down the pitch and putting a perfectly placed shot over the head of Hiram's keeper for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

After scoring on five of their first 13 shots, Kenyon's next 11 looks did not result in any additional goals. Hiram made six saves over the span, and Kenyon's offense and defense combined to keep the pressure on the home half of the pitch for the second 45 minutes.

Kenyon's 13th second-half shot came in the 90th minute when a soaring pass found Julianna Granetzke in an opening on the right side of the net. From there, the first-year player knocked the ball into the net for her first intercollegiate goal, capping a 6-0 Kenyon win. The Owls finished with a 25-2 shot advantage that included a 17-2 edge in shots on goal. Additionally, Kenyon earned nine corner kicks while allowing zero.

The six goals were Kenyon's most since 2015 when the team bested Defiance College 6-0 on the road. The last time Kenyon crossed the five-goal threshold was in 2019 when the team earned a 5-4 home win against Otterbein University, the No. 15-ranked team in the nation.

After the dominant win, the Owls wrap up their season with a pair of home games next week. Kenyon hosts rival Denison University (4-7-4, 3-0-2 NCAC) on Mavec Field for a mid-week, midday matchup at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Kenyon's regular-season finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, when the Owls welcome Wittenberg University (2-8-5, 1-1-2 NCAC) to Gambier.
