Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls use extra frame to defeat Colonels

DANVILLE, Ky. -- An overtime goal from Hannah Paprotna lifted the Kenyon College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory against the Centre College Colonels on Saturday afternoon. The game was the last of the season for Kenyon and finalized the Owls' record at 10-7, marking the eighth straight season the team finished at .500 or better.

With the game knotted at 2-2, Kenyon's winning goal developed off a penalty corner about four minutes into the extra period. Paprotna inserted the corner. The ball eventually ended up with Bella Kern, who fired a shot that was blocked by a Centre defender. The ball then bounced around until it came back to Paprotna, who had just taken a couple steps over the end line after the insert. She turned, fired and ended the game with her first goal of the season.

That goal was the first time Kenyon had the lead in the game. Centre scored once in the first quarter and Kenyon answered in the second. The third quarter was scoreless, but then things got a little crazy. Centre scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:26 remaining in the game and looked like it had the victory in hand. Kenyon, however, scored 26 seconds later to tie the game back up.

That second game-tying goal occurred with Lana Stone and Kern working the ball down the field. Kern ended up getting the shot off at close range, beating Centre goalkeeper Kate Helton.

Prior to that goal, Stone scored the Owls' first goal back in the second quarter. That was her third goal of the season and her third in the team's last three games.

Kern, who recorded a goal and an assist against the Colonels, finished the 2022 campaign with team-highs of seven goals and 16 points in 16 games played.

Payton Doan played the entire game in goal for Kenyon and made five saves. She faced 16 Centre shots and 13 penalty corners. At the other end of the field, Centre goalkeepers,   Carlie McKenry and Helton, combined to face six Kenyon shots and five penalty corners. McKenry made the lone save for the Colonels.
