Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Two Gould goals secure NCAC crown for Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- With Saturday's 2-0 home victory over the Wittenberg University Tigers, the Kenyon College women's soccer team earned the right to celebrate the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championship title.

The Owls, who own a 5-1-1 record in conference play, finished off Wittenberg and then saw Ohio Wesleyan University end up in a scoreless tie at Oberlin College. That result left Kenyon atop the NCAC standings by itself and secured for the Owls home-field advantage in next week's four-team conference postseason tournament.

The regular-season NCAC crown was Kenyon's first since the 2017 season and the fourth in program history.

Early in the game, Kenyon got the only goal it would need. A throw-in on the right side from Maggie Williard ended up coming back to the feet of the senior. Williard then passed over to junior Sadie Gould who was running up the middle of the field. Gould dribbled through a couple of defenders and let loose with a long shot, from about 25 yards out. Her shot went over the head of the Wittenberg goalkeeper and under the crossbar, just 2:07 from the start.

Gould wasn't finished, though. In the game's 65th minute, she tacked on an insurance goal to put the Tigers out of reach. This time, Gould used a pass from Hailey Moss and headed home her team-leading sixth score of the season and the 10th of her Kenoyn career. For Moss, a sophomore, the assist was her team-leading third of the season.

The result was a fitting end to the conference schedule for the Owls, who recorded four shutout wins and allowed just two goals in NCAC play this season. Kenyon's current shutout streak spans four games.

With a solid defense in front of senior goalkeeper Leah Anderson, Kenyon lowered its team goals against average to 1.06, while Anderson brought her personal mark down to 1.01.

Kenyon outshot Wittenberg 20-7, so Anderson wasn't tested much on Saturday. She did, however, make three saves to ring up her sixth shutout win of the season.

As the Owls look ahead to the postseason, they will be hosting a semifinal game at Mavec Field on Wednesday afternoon.
