Yeowomen hold off Ladies' furious comeback

OBERLIN, Ohio – In a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament quarterfinal game that saw two ties and four lead changes, the Kenyon College Ladies couldn't complete the comeback against the Oberlin College Yeowomen on Tuesday night. The Ladies erased a 17-point deficit to take a brief two-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the Yeowomen defense sealed the game down the stretch.

Starting the game for the Ladies, Claudia Cooke scored on a layup. By the midway point in the first quarter, the Yeowomen held a 9-2 lead. Grace Connery made Kenyon's first three-point shot of the night to cut away at the Oberlin lead. Boosted by Connery's three, the Ladies ended the quarter on a 7-2 run and trailed, 15-10, at the end of the first.

Opening the second quarter, Oberlin went on a 6-1 run, pushing its lead to 10. Cooke ended the streak with a pair of free throws with 7:24 before halftime. Connery then banked in a shot from deep to bring the Ladies within single digits with 3:49 left in the half.

On Kenyon's next possession, Katie Orefice made a running layup, bringing the Ladies within seven. With leass than 90 seconds to go, Madelyn Anderson found Orefice on a backdoor cut to get another bucket inside. Despite shooting 20 percent from three-point range, the Ladies still remained in the game due to a six-point advantage in free throws. As the two teams went to the locker room, Oberlin led Kenyon 31-24.

The Yeowomen came out of the locker room hot from the field, opening the second half on a 10-0 run. Connery ended the run with another three almost four minutes into the third quarter. In just under 90 seconds, Cooke scored six straight points for the Ladies. Once again, Connery made a three with 2:37 left in the third to bring Kenyon within single-digits. The Yeowomen started the quarter strong, but the Ladies finished the quarter stronger, bringing the game to 47-41.

Starting the fourth quarter, Cooke scored off the glass to bring the Ladies within four. Following an Oberlin turnover, Orefice pulled up from inside the arc, narrowing the Oberlin lead to two. A quick six-point run by the Yeowomen brought their lead back to eight. Back-to-back three-pointers by Anderson brought the game back to two. With 6:07 left in the game, Orefice tied the game at 53 with a long jumper. With 1:59, Cooke converted a hook shot to give the Ladies their first lead of the game, 57-55. With 22 seconds left, Alyson Jefferson made the bucket and drew the foul to put Oberlin up by one. Camille Zinaich drew a personal foul and made one of two, putting the Yeowomen up by two. Orefice's attempt at a game-winner went too long as Oberlin took the tournament matchup, 61-59.

Orefice and Connery poured in 16 points each in the loss. Cooke registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Ladies' season ends with a 6-20 overall record, 4-12 in NCAC play, while Oberlin advances to the semifinal round.
