Ladies notch road win against Presidents

WASHINGTON, PA – In a game featuring two dominant offenses and goals galore, the Kenyon College Ladies defeated the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents 17-11 on a windy Saturday afternoon in Washington, PA. The Ladies were led by Caroline O'Neil and her five goal, three assist performance as they won their third straight game, continuing their impressive 5-1 start to the season.

It took less than a minute for Kenyon to open the scoring, as Ella Murphy found Emma Hutchison for an early goal to give the Ladies a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Presidents were able to keep up the pace and quickly scored an equalizer. The opening quarter continued in this back and forth nature until the game became knotted at four goals apiece with 5:19 left in the period. From there, the Ladies flipped a switch, with Murphy, O'Neil, and Julia Losey all connected for goals, putting Kenyon up 7-4. The Ladies' defense also stepped up in the final five minutes of the quarter, halting the Presidents' previously high-octane offense.

Both teams found less offensive success in the second quarter. Maggie Garner had a quick score for the Ladies within the first minute and O'Neil added two more, one on a free position shot, while the Presidents countered with a goal of their own. Going into halftime, Kenyon held a 10-5 advantage.

Offense ticked back up in the third quarter, in which the Ladies outscored the Presidents 5-3 to push the score to 15-8. While Washington and Jefferson drew first blood in the quarter with an early goal, beginning at the 9:45 mark, the Ladies had a four goal barrage in a three minute stretch, featuring scores from Brett Bearrows, O'Neil, Garner, and Hutchison. That strong run helped Kenyon withstand two late third quarter goals from the Presidents and maintain a commanding lead at the end of the quarter.

Washington and Jefferson took their momentum from late in the third into the fourth quarter, finally outscoring Kenyon in a frame 3-2. But it was too little too late for the Presidents, who had fallen into too deep of a deficit to manage a comeback. By the final whistle, Kenyon secured themselves a 17-11 victory.

Despite committing 21 turnovers, Kenyon was successful due to their aggression, outshooting the Presidents 33-22 for the game. They also excelled on clears, making 15 of 17, and won the draw control battle 20-11.

In addition to O'Neil's brilliant day, the Ladies got strong performances from Hutchison and Garner, who scored three goals apiece. Garner also led the team with nine defensive clears while Alex Tiatia had a team-high five ground balls. Bearrows contributed all over the field with two goals, four ground balls, and six defensive clears. Nola Garland got the win in goal for the Ladies, saving six shots while allowing seven goals in forty minutes of play.

The Ladies will be back in action on Monday, March 21 when they take on the University of Mount Union in their final non-conference game on the schedule. The contest starts at 4 p.m. at the Benson Bowl in Gambier, Ohio.
