Ladies rally for one-goal win against Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Down by three goals at halftime, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team put together a six-goal third quarter and completed its rally with a 9-8 home win against the DePauw University Tigers on Saturday.

The win extended the Ladies' win streak to nine games, while improving their records to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The tough loss for DePauw dropped the Tigers to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in NCAC play.

Kenyon got off to a good start, netting the first goal of the game off a shot from junior Ella Murphy. That, however, would be it for the Ladies in the first frame. DePauw turned the tables, scored three times and took a 3-1 lead into the second.

The Tiger lead moved to 4-1 early in the second, but Murphy scored two more times, pulling the Ladies within one goal. Again, DePauw responded to Murphy and the Ladies, scoring twice more to take a three-goal lead at intermission.

When the teams returned to play in the third, Kenyon shifted things to another gear, cranking out four straight scores to take its first lead of the game. That flurry included goals from Emma Hutchison, Mallory Brophy, Caroline O'Neil and Murphy, who finished the contest with a game-high four goals.

Later in the third, DePauw evened the score at 7-7. Less than a minute later, Alex Tiatia drove through the Tigers defense and put Kenyon back on top. About 40 seconds after that, Tatumn Eccleston threaded a pass to Julia Losey, who scored on the run, giving Kenyon a 9-7 advantage. Losey finished the game with a goal and an assist, while Eccleston contributed two assists.

DePauw capitalized on a Kenyon yellow card in the fourth quarter, but that was the only goal of the final period, as the Kenyon defense held up to secure the one-goal victory.

Throughout the game, the Kenyon defense did a tremendous job in transition, forcing DePauw into nine failed clears in 21 attempts. Anchoring the defense was first-year goalkeeper Nola Garand, who made four saves.

With two games left in the regular season, the Ladies still hold sole possession of first place in the NCAC standings. The team's next game won't be until Wednesday, April 27 at The College of Wooster.
