Ladies take sole possession of conference crown

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team claimed sole possession of the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season title for the first time since 2013. They solidified that position with Saturday's 17-6 victory at Oberlin College.

It's the second regular-season title for the Kenyon women, who improved their season record to 13-1 and, for the first time in program history, posted an undefeated 7-0 conference record. The title also means the Ladies are the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAC postseason tournament, which will get underway with the semifinal round on Wednesday. In that contest, the Ladies will entertain the tournament's No. 4 seed College of Wooster at 1 p.m.

On the way to the title, the Ladies got a game-high six points from Ella Murphy, who scored five times and assisted on one other goal. Maddie Garner threw in four more goals for the Ladies and Blythe Karras racked up three goals and one assist. Other goal-scorers for Kenyon included Tatumn Eccleston, Alex Tiatia, Mallory Brophy, Caroline O'Neil and Arielle Dumalac.

The focused Kenyon team started the game with a flurry of five goals within the first five minutes. Murphy had two of those five goals. Garner followed up with two of her goals, steering the Ladies to a 9-2 lead after the first quarter of play.

Oberlin (6-9, 2-4 NCAC) would never get closer the rest of the way. Murphy scored three more times in the second quarter and the Ladies went into the break with a 13-4 advantage.

In the second half of play, Kenyon outscored Oberlin 4-2 to seal the win.

First-year Nola Garand started in goal for the Ladies, played 45 minutes, yielded four goals and made four saves. Her season goals against average now stands at 6.62 and her save percentage moved to .507. Junior Delaney Gallagher finished off the last 15 minutes, allowing two goals and making one save.

Overall, Kenyon outshot Oberlin 39-14. The Ladies also forced Oberlin into 27 turnovers.
