Kenyon upends nationally-ranked Denison, 8-6

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Goalkeeper Nola Garand made a handful of spectacular first-half saves and anchored a Kenyon College defense that smothered the No. 21-ranked Denison University Big Red during the Ladies' 8-6 upset of their conference rival on Saturday.

Denison, the five-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) champion, came into the game with a 6-3 overall record and 2-0 NCAC record, having only lost to other nationally-ranked teams earlier this season. Kenyon, which logged its first win against Denison since 2013, improved to 9-1 overall and took sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 3-0 mark.

Garand and the defense set the tone early, allowing just one Denison goal in the first half of play. The Big Red managed just nine shots during those 30 minutes. One of those shots was a goal, one sailed wide and Garand saved the other seven.

On the other side of the Field at Benson Bowl, the Ladies offense got a free-position goal from Ella Murphy and then, four minutes later, a goal from Emma Hutchison. Denison answered with its lone tally of the half, but Murphy whipped up another free-position goal to carry Kenyon into the second quarter with a 3-1 lead.

Caroline O'Neil scored twice in the second quarter, sandwiching a score from Maddie Garner and the Ladies went into the break with a 6-1 advantage.

Denison scored the first goal of the second half, only to be answered by Kenyon goals from Julia Losey and Mallory Brophy, increasing the Ladies' lead to 8-2.

In the fourth quarter, Denison took advantage of a couple Kenyon yellow cards and scored four times, twice with an extra player. The Big Red, however, didn't pull within the final two-goal margin until they netted their final goal just before the game-ending horn sounded.

O'Neil wound up with a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Garand finished with eight saves, while the Ladies outshot the Big Red 26-17.
