GAMBIER, Ohio. -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team fell 3-0 at home against Otterbein College after three early goals put a damper on one of the final days of summer.
Otterbein jumped ahead in the fifth minute, taking a 1-0 lead after a goal from Bailey Zanella. The Owls successfully defended a pair of corner kicks earlier in the fifth minute and blocked an attempt at a header off the set piece, but the Cardinals cleaned up a bad bounce off a Kenyon defender.
It was deja vu all over again in the ninth minute as the visitors pushed the ball into Kenyon's box and set up a dangerous attack. An Owls defender got in the way of a pass, but the ball ricocheted to Gillian Losey, who sent it into the bottom right corner of the goal to put Otterbein up 2-0 in under nine minutes of play.
The Cardinals capitalized on a pair of yellow cards issued to Kenyon after
Kayla Arone took down an Otterbein player at midfield. Otterbein's Payton Kaufman played the free kick deep into the Kenyon box, where Lauren Alley boxed out the Owls' defense and put the ball into the goal to put the visitors ahead 3-0 at the 25:34 mark.
After three goals in the first 26 minutes of the game, neither team scored over the final 64-plus minutes of action. Kenyon finished with an 8-6 edge in first-half shots and out-shot Otterbein 9-0 in the second half, but each team finished with four shots on goal. Junior midfielder
Sadie Gould registered a game-high four shots for the Owls. Sophomore goalkeeper
Gabi Pesticci played the second 45 minutes for Kenyon when she and the Owls' defense held the Cardinals scoreless.
Up next, Kenyon (1-4-2) heads to Hanover, Indiana to face Hanover College (4-2-0) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.
