Lane scores twice in Kenyon’s win at Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Second- and fourth-quarter goals from sophomore Grace Lane propelled the Kenyon College field hockey team to a 3-0 win at Earlham College on Wednesday night. The victory bumped Kenyon's overall season record to 5-3, while host Earlham fell to 0-9 with the loss.

After 26:25 of scoreless play, Lane got the Owls on the board with her second goal of the season. She drove into the Quakers' zone on her own, got to the top of the circle, took a couple more steps and fired her shot past goalkeeper Rachel Alma and into the Earlham cage.

That turned out to be all the offense Kenyon would need. The Owls allowed just three shots and three penalty corners throughout the game. Payton Doan and Megan Lydon split time in the Kenyon goal and made one save apiece. Defender Lucy Scott made a defensive save, giving the Owls three saves for the game.

Late in the third quarter, Kenyon tacked on another goal. This time it was Lydia Turk. With 48 seconds remaining on the clock, she drove the right wing, split two defenders and launched her shot in the lower left corner of the cage. The goal was her first of the season.

At the start of the fourth quarter, just about two minutes after Turk's goal, Lane scored her second of the game and third of the season. Following a centering pass that multiple players converged on, the ball popped out to open space right in front of the goal. Alma came out of goal to challenge the crossing pass and that left Lane a clear alley to slap the ball over the goal line.

Lane had three shots for the game, accounting for a quarter of the team total.

The result marked the end of Kenyon's season-opening, non-conference contests. Next up for the Owls is their first North Coast Athletic Conference game of the season, which will be Saturday at Denison University. A little more than a week ago, Kenyon notched a 1-0 home win over Denison in a non-conference competition.
