GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-0 against the Rochester Institute of Technology to close out a two-game road trip in Rochester, New York.
The first shot of the game nearly found the mark as RIT's attempt at the two-minute mark hit the post. The Tigers kept the pressure on the Kenyon half of the pitch in the first half, emphasized by a 2:46 stretch from the 18th to 21st minutes that saw the home team let four shots loose, but none of the attempts were shots on goal. Kenyon's Hailey Moss accounted for the first shot on goal of the match in the 23rd minute, but RIT's Darcie Jones secured the save.
Despite the Tigers holding a 7-3 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, the score remained 0-0 through the first 45 minutes. However, things quickly changed in the second half as RIT drew a foul on Kenyon and scored after the free kick at the 46:44 mark after Maddy Bullis put the home team up 1-0 off an assist from Sam Halligan under two minutes into the second period. The Tigers were not done there and kept the pressure on the Owls by earning a corner kick just 21 seconds after Kenyon's kickoff. The corner kick led to a shot that was blocked by the Owls' defense, but Jessica Gomez found the mark 35 seconds later at the 47:56 mark to put RIT up 2-0.
Kenyon looked for a quick answer and earned a corner kick after their kickoff, but the set piece led to an on-target shot by Tallula Sheridan that was saved. The Owls put two more shots on goal in the second half, but the visitors could not break through on offense despite Kenyon's defense keeping the Tigers scoreless for the final 42 minutes of the half. RIT finished the game with an 18-8 edge in shots, but the teams matched one another with four shots on goal apiece. The Tigers also earned seven corners to the Owls' two and held the all-important 2-0 lead on the scoreboard after 90 minutes.
Up next, the Owls return home to Gambier, Ohio to host Kalamazoo College on Saturday, Sep. 10, at 1 p.m. on Mavec Field for their home opener, kicking off a three-game homestand in the process.
