Owls topple Terriers, earn first conference win

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team (6-2-5, 1-1-1 NCAC) claimed its first conference win of the season in a 4-0 victory against the Hiram College Terriers (4-7-2, 0-3 NCAC) Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field.

Kenyon, which has now defeated Hiram in nine straight regular-season matchups, entered the contest coming off a loss and a tie in conference play, so the Saturday win was important for movement up the standings.

Action began in the sixth minute of the game, when Eun Hae Lillig started a breakaway at midfield, dribbling past a defender down the sideline before crossing the ball toward the box. Morgan Baker found the ball and launched a bullet just off the top crossbar, which set up a corner kick for Hailey Moss. Lillig was able to finish off the break she started, as she fired a shot past the outstretched hands of the goalie to break open the scoring.

Kenyon had possession of the ball for the vast majority of the first half, though it did not tack on any more goals and the half concluded with a 1-0 lead.

The Owls began to heat up in the second half, as they took 21 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and three of which found the back of the net. In the 61st minute, Baker, who leads Kenyon with six goals on the season, took a pass from Kayla Arone and ripped a strong shot off the goalie's hands into the net. In the 66th minute, Moss dribbled the ball across the pitch and drove a goal into the top of the net from deep outside the box.

Baker was not done, yet. About six minutes after the Owls' third goal, she scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Sadie Gould, bringing the score to 4-0.

Kenyon totaled a season-high 45 shots, 19 of which were on goal, while Hiram managed only four shots, one of which was on goal.

Kenyon goalkeeper Gabi Pesticci saved the only shot she faced on the day, while on the other side of the field, Baker paced the Owls with nine shots. Gould and Talulla Sheridan had six shots apiece.

The Owls will look to ride this positive momentum into their next contest, which will  be Tuesday, one the road, against Ohio Wesleyan.
