Owls take regular season finale

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team (7-5-5) hosted its final regular season matchup on Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field against the Oberlin College Yeowomen (7-8-2) in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest.

In a back-and-forth match that was hotly contested, Kenyon's two second half goals ultimately solidified the win, besting the Yeowomen 4-2 in the regular reason finale.

The Owls struck first early in the game, as Hailey Moss booted a corner right to the head of a rushing Sadie Gould in the 14th minute, netting her fourth goal of the season tied for second most on the team.

Ten minutes later, the Yeos responded with a goal of its own, as a Zoe Garver cross was knocked away by Owls keeper Ariel Kite, but the ball was knocked right to Heather Benway and she tapped in the equalizer 1-1.

Kenyon fought back immediately, as Morgan Baker stole the ball from an Oberlin defender, drove to the goal and beat keeper Ali Grant on the low left side just 30 seconds later for her team-high seventh goal to give the Owls the lead once again at 2-1, a lead that was held into the half despite great chances down the stretch to extend the advantage.

In the first, Kenyon outshot Oberlin 6-3 but trailed in corners 5-2. Kite made two saves while Grant made three for the Yeowomen.

Kenyon came out fast in the second, with quick chances from Moss, Eun Hae Lillig and two Talulla Sheridan that all just missed the net.

Then, in the 57th minute, Oberlin found another tying goal. Off of a corner from the far side, Benway found Tacha Lee just inside the top of the box unmarked, and she sent a rocket of a shot past the charging Owls defenders to set the game at 2-2 with over 30 minutes to play.

In the game's 71st minute, sophomore Truly Martin fielded a contested pass from Alex Sokolik  and sent a long, high, arching shot from about 15 yards past the midfiled and over the head of the Oberlin keeper for her first career goal to send Kenyon up 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining in the heated contest.

Ten minutes after Martin's goal, Lillig netted her fourth goal of the season from a long assist from Moss that was up and over two Oberlin defenders, giving Kenyon a 4-2 advantage and solidifying the win to end the game.

Defensively, Kite added to the performance with two saves, and Lilly Lucas came in to close the game and had one.

With the win, the Owls finish the season 7-5-5. While the team will miss the NCAC playoffs, it certainly has much to look forward to for the 2024 season. Kenyon loses eight seniors this season, but retains four of the six top point-scorers in Baker, Moss, Lillig, and Julianna Granetzke, with the first three getting involved on the score sheet today.
