Owls unable to upend Big Red

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team traveled to Denison University on Saturday morning to face the Big Red in the teams' annual rivalry meet. As expected, the meet was a close one, but the host team held on to chalk up a 167-133 win over the Owls.

Each team had eight wins in the 16 events contested. The Owls and Big Red split two relay events. Denison won both diving events and Kenyon claimed seven of the 12 individual swimming events.

The Big Red opened the meet with wins in the 200-yard medley relay and the 1,000-yard freestyle, but Kenyon answered in the next event, as first-year Bengisu Caymaz whipped up a winning time of 1:52.30 in the 200-yard freestyle.

The Owls momentum resulted in three more wins over the next four events. Senior Caleigh Wukitch claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 56.72. Junior Gabrielle Wei then won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.04 and, two events later, sophomore Gwen Eisenbeis took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 23.96.

At that point in the meet, Kenyon held a 66-65 advantage on the scoreboard.

The Big Red then won the one-meter diving competition and the 200-yard backstroke. Sandwiched between those two events, Kenyon junior Sydney Geboy won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 52.80.

Kenyon countered with victories in the 200-yard breaststroke, which Wei won in 2:20.90, and the 500-yard freestyle, which Caymaz won in 4:57.51, but the Big Red's depth kept them in front, 119-107, with three events remaining.

Denison won the next two events and expanded its lead to 39 points before Kenyon closed things out with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. That Owls quartet, which clocked in at 3:30.93, included Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault, Molly Haag, Geboy and Caymaz.

The Owls have some time to recuperate and will next be in the water when they host the three-day Total Performance Invitational, beginning Thursday, November 16.
