Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Kenyon doubles up Capital in statement win

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team regrouped after a lightning delay Wednesday night and used a mid-game surge to power past Capital University for an impressive 20-10 non-conference road win.

Both teams came into the game with 2-0 records and both were coming off 2022 seasons in which they won their respective conference titles and made appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The loss for Capital, which had a 20-1 record a season ago, was its first regular-season defeat since March 27, 2021, a span of 25 games.

After a 4-3 start for the host Comets, a lightning delay suspended the game for nearly an hour. When play resumed, Kenyon tied things up with a free position goal from Blythe Karras. Her score just continued a back-and-forth between the two teams until Capital gained an 8-6 advantage with 5:58 left on the second-quarter clock.

From that point on, Kenyon completely took over the game. The Owls went on a 4-0 run over a 3:44 span to close out the half with a 10-8 advantage. The quick Kenyon spurt was fueled by goals from Caroline O'Neil, Ella Murphy, Mallory Brophy, and Tatumn Eccleston.

The Owls didn't let up in the second half. In fact, they extended their 4-0 run to a 13-0 run that all but decided the final outcome. During that time, O'Neil and Brophy both scored three times, while Eccleston and Lily Mason scored twice.

While the offense was running on all cylinders, Kenyon's best defense might have been its offense, as well. The unit maintained possession for large chunks of time and kept the ball out of the hands of the Comets, who were averaging 22.5 goals per game this season, one year after averaging 19.7 goals per game. In all, the Kenyon offense out-shot Capital 50-21.

With the Owls completely dominating, the Comets did not score again until the 5:33 mark of the fourth quarter. That scoreless drought for the home team covered more than 30 minutes of play. Even when the Comets did have offensive opportunities they were frequently thwarted by a quick Kenyon defense, one that forced 22 turnovers and 11 failed clears.

By the time the final horn sounded, O'Neil tallied a team-high five points on four goals and an assist. Mason also scored four goals, while Brophy finished with three. Kate Lengel and Eccleston both chipped in with a pair and Eccleston also served up two assists for a four-point game that matched Brophy and Mason.

Kenyon utilized a balanced offense that saw 11 players record at least one point. Capital, on the other hand, had just six with Grace Osborn leading the way. She matched O'Neil's output of four goals and one assist.

Despite their recent success, the 3-0 start to the season is the Owls first since the 2016 campaign. They'll look to keep it going on Saturday, when they host Washington and Jefferson College in a 1 p.m. game on The Field at Benson Bowl.
