Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Seniors pave way for ninth straight win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, the nationally-ranked Kenyon College women's lacrosse team looked to its veteran players to lead the way during a convincing 19-5 non-conference home victory against the Allegheny College Gators.

The win for Kenyon, ranked at No. 18 and No. 23 in two different national polls, ran the team's record to a perfect 9-0. That marks the best start to a season in program history. Previously, the 2010 team owned the distinction with an 8-0 start, before losing its ninth game.

Kenyon allowed an Allegheny goal to start the game, but then responded with three goals from three different seniors. Ella Murphy kicked things off and, over the next two minutes, Caroline O'Neil and Julia Losey scored. Junior Kate Lengel and first-year Lily Mason also scored in the first quarter, giving the Owls a 5-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.

In the second quarter, Kenyon took full control and put the game away. The Owls went on a 6-0 run that included one more goal from O'Neil, Murphy, and Losey. Lengel scored again, too, and Mason chalked up two more, as the Owls went into intermission with a 12-4 lead.

The third quarter was more of the same. Kenyon outscored Allegheny 4-0 and then opened the fourth quarter with two more goals, putting together its second 6-0 run of the game. That outburst contained two more tallies from Losey, another from O'Neil, Murphy, and Lengel, as well as senior Tatumn Eccleston's first score of the game.

In all, the Kenyon offense out-shot Allegheny 38-14. Losey wound up with a game-high four goals, as well as four draw controls. O'Neil racked up three goals and one assist, while Murphy, Lengel and Mason all scored three times.

Kenyon had three other seniors make contributions, too. Caroline James got her first start in goal and picked up the win after making one save. Another senior goalkeeper, Delaney Gallagher, played the fourth quarter and made one save, while, back among the field players, senior Emma Hutchison recorded a game-high five draw controls to go along with a pair of ground balls.

For Allegheny, which fell to 7-3 after the loss, Senna Perelman scored a team-high three times.

The Owls, now looking for a tenth straight win, will begin North Coast Athletic Conference play next weekend with a Saturday contest against Ohio Wesleyan University.
