Owls top Tigers, run win streak to five

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing its last home match of the season and celebrating Senior Day, the Kenyon College women's tennis team coasted Sunday to a 9-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory against the visiting Tigers of Wittenberg University.

Prior to the match, the coaching staff recognized the contributions and achievements of the team's two seniors, Catriona MacIntosh and Erika Pontillo. While the latter did not play, MacIntosh went out and recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Claire Stechow and at No. 4 singles. MacIntosh is now 11-5 in singles play this season.

At No. 1 and No. 2 singles, first-years Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl kept winning. Lazaridou, now 14-3 this season, posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Ashley Isaac in the top spot, while Berl, who sports a 13-5 personal record, notched a 6-4, 6-0 win against Caroline Sproule in the No. 2 match-up.


Other Kenyon straight-set singles winners included Shadia Amado Aguad at No. 3, Lalasa Nagireddy at No. 5 and Irina Beshentseva at No. 6.


Prior to the singles matches, Lazaridou and Berl teamed up to hold off Isaac and Sproule, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles match. Amado Aguad paired with Eleni Dakos and recorded an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while Nagireddy played alongside Natalie Connelly to cruise to an 8-0 victory at No. 3.


The win, Kenyon's fifth in a row, has the No. 32-ranked Owls at 11-3 overall and 3-0 in conference competition. On the other side of the net, Wittenberg dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play.
