Owls pitch semifinal shutout, move into final

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team breezed through its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament semifinal match, posting a 6-0 win over The College of Wooster on Saturday morning at Denison University.

The win launched Kenyon into the tournament's final match, which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m., also at Denison. The Owls await the winner of the other semifinal match between host Denison and Wittenberg University. The winner of Sunday's final will earn the NCAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Kenyon, the conference tournament's No. 1 seed and ranked at No. 32 nationally, used the win to improve its season record to 17-4. The Owls have won 11 of their last 12 matches. Wooster, the No. 4 seed and making its first semifinal showing since 1999, bowed out of tournament play and closed out its season with a 12-7 record.

The Owls delivered three quick wins in doubles play to get the match started. Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl finished their match first, taking the No. 1 bout by an 8-1 count. At No. 2, Eleni Dakos and Shadia Amado Aguad checked out with an 8-2 win, while at No. 3, Catriona MacIntosh and Natalie Connelly completed the sweep with an 8-4 win.

Dakos then dispatched Kim Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match, giving Kenyon a 4-0 team lead. Berl and Lazaridou finished their singles matches at roughly the same time, completing the 6-0 team win. Berl topped Oita Otilia 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Lazaridou chalked up a 6-0, 6-1 win against Janaki Jagannathan in the No. 1 singles match.
